Libya Al-Hurra to begin broadcasting tonight
Libya Al-Hurra, the first locally based television station to operate in Libya since the start of the revolution, will begin broadcasting this evening.
The station will air promotional material for two hours from 8pm (2100GMT) before going live at 10pm (2300GMT) with a two hour broadcast from outside the Benghazi Courthouse, delivered by Zuheir Al-Barasi.
On the relaunch of the channel, launched online in the early days of the revolution by Mohammad Nabus, Al-Barasi said: “This will be a historic moment for the station and for Libya. Mohamed Nabbous, a former colleague and friend and founder Libya Al-Hurra. Gaddafi forces assassinated him for highlighting to the rest of the world the atrocities committed by the his regime. The re-launch of Libya Al-Hurra is done in his name and we are all looking forward to providing the people of Libya with a professional and independent service.”
Mohamed Nabbous founded the internet TV channel Libya Al-Hurra (Free Libya) on 17 February. He was killed, aged 28, by a sniper on 19 March during a military operation in Benghazi. According to the agency, the TV channel broadcast programs about the consequences of actions of government troops in the east, and generally commented on the events in Libya
