Libyan Arab Jamahiriya Crisis Situation Report No. 40
- On 24 May, unrest at Choucha Camp left four dead, nineteen injured and parts of the camp destroyed. The situation in the camp has now eased. The humanitarian community and the Tunisian Government are discussing the security, the position and the composition of the camps in Tunisia.
- An estimated 602,783 people, mostly migrants, have left Libya and have not returned since the start of the crisis in February. This number is based on data that 85 per cent of Libyans crossing into Egypt, and 67 per cent of Libyans crossing into Tunisia, return back to Libya.
- Fighting in the Nafusa Mountains is on going. Fuel and cash shortages continue to affect the daily life of the Libyans.
- Explosive remnants of war (ERW) and landmines pose a serious risk to people in conflict-affected areas across Libya. Mine risk education as well as mapping for ERW are of utmost importance
- The US$407 million revised Flash Appeal for the Libyan Crisis is currently funded at 45.6 per cent with US$185 million committed and $3.6 million in pledges.

This report produced by OCHA Libya in collaboration with humanitarian partners, covering the period of 19 May to 23 May. The next report will be issued on or around 26 May.
I. HIGHLIGHTS / KEY PRIORITIES
• The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator and a team including IOM, WHO and UNDSS, traveled to Tripoli from 20 – 22 May to discuss the return of an international humanitarian presence in the capital.
• In the Western Mountains area, the most affected populations are around Yafran, Al Qaala and Kekla.
• A fire overnight at Choucha Camp on the Tunisian-Libyan border resulted in the deaths of four camp residents and one injured.
• An IOM ship evacuated 785 people from Misrata, and delivered 300 metric tons of cargo including a field hospital and other medical supplies.
• The US$407 million revised Regional Flash Appeal for the Libyan Crisis is currently funded at 44 percent with US$179 million committed and $3.6 million in pledges.

- To date around 14,000 people have arrived by boat to Italy and Malta from Libya. At least 1,200 people have died during the journey or are missing.
- Fuel scarcity continues across Libya.
- The number of people remaining at the camps near the Ras Ajdir, at the Tunisia border, is the lowest since the beginning of the crisis at 2,375 people.
- Some 51,647 Libyans crossed into Tunisia at Dehibat border point. Most are staying with host communities.
- The Revised Flash Appeal for the Libyan Crisis will be launched by the Emergency Relief Coordinator, Ms. Valerie Amos, in Geneva on 18 May.
